Botany Section -

Herbaria

One of the sections of the Natural Sciences Department of the Museum of the Republic of Srpska is the Botany Section. The Herbarium collection includes four collections:

  1. Herbarium officinale I and II
  2. Herbarium Florae Banjalucensis I and II
  3. Herbarium Servitii Bosnae
  4. General Herbarium of Flora of the Republic of Srpska, which also includes the Herbarium of Wild Medicinal and Edible Plants

The Botany Section has preserved the first herbarium collections since 1952, when the Museum of the Republic of Srpska, which at the time was known as the Museum of Bosanska Krajina, purchased three herbaria from the Mariastern Trappist Abbey.

Trappist Collections

The Trappist collections include one volume of Herbarium Servitii Bosnae, two folders of Herbarium Florae Banjalucensis I and II, and two folders of Herbarium officinale I and II. These herbaria were created in the 1940s. The plant species were collected between 1942 and 1951, and the author of these collections was Professor Konrad Janković.
These collections primarily contain medicinal, edible, and cultivated plant species, as well as some rare and protected plants collected by Konrad Janković in the viciity of Banja Luka. Due to their origin and age, the Trappist herbaria hold exceptional historical value. Their significance is also reflected in the fact that they form the foundation of the Botany Section of the Natural Sciences Department of the Museum of the Republic of Srpska, as well as the botanical collection Herbaria.
Later, these collections were supplemented with the Herbarium of Wild Medicinal and Edible Plants (1997) and Herbarium novum (1998).

General Herbarium of Flora of the Republic of Srpska

The General Herbarium of Flora the Republic of Srpska was created by merging two herbaria and supplementing the Herbarium of Wild Medicinal and Edible Plants with new specimens from 1998 to the present day. This collection primarily contains wild medicinal and edible plants, as well as specimens of endemic and endangered plant species. It includes specimens of vascular plants and one specimen of lichen, all exclusively from the Republic of Srpska, predominantly its northwestern part.
Herbaria hold an important place in the Natural Sciences Department, both in terms of material preservation and as a testimony to past times. This collection holds exceptional cultural and scientific value, as it documents the biodiversity of the flora of a specific biogeographical region, as well as the distribution and spread of species.
Through research work, as well as through permanent and thematic exhibitions, the biodiversity of the flora of our area is presented to the public, raising awareness about the importance of conserving natural resources and highlighting the endangered status of certain plant species and the necessary conservation measures. The botanical collection Herbaria botanical collection is part of the rich natural heritage preserved at the Museum of the Republic of Srpska.

Mycological Collection of Fungi

As part of the permanent exhibition of the Natural Sciences Department of the Museum of the Republic of Srpska, in the central display case of the Botany Section, alongside plant material 52 species of fungi are on display. These are models (casts) from the mycological collection of fungi.
This exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for all mushroom enthusiasts to get a closer look at their world, learn about the species that grow in our region, and discover which ones are edible, conditionally edible, inedible, and which are poisonous.
