Permanent Exhibition - Ottoman Period

The history of Ottoman rule (1527-1878) is explored by the History Department of the Museum of the Republic of Srpska, which is responsible for the collection, scholarly processing, presentation, and publication of historical artifacts significant to the national history of the Bosnian Eyalet during this period.
The museum collection (artistic and historical artifacts) is classified according to traditional museum standards into three-dimensional and two-dimensional objects, divided into separate subcollections.
The exhibited artifacts, primarily military-historical items (maces, war hammers, flails, morning stars, yataghans, daggers, spears, flintlock rifles, flintlock and percussion pistols, a schiavona sword, sabers, and military equipment), offer visitors insight into the period of Ottoman rule in this region. In addition to their historical and documentary value, many of these artifacts also hold artistic significance. Particularly valuable unique items in this collection include a Mongol shield and helmet, a Janissary uniform, and the talismanic shirt of Husein-Captain Gradaščević, historically known as the “Dragon of Bosnia.”

Ottoman Period Collection

The three-dimensional museum objects are divided into five collections:

  1. The Collection of Weapons and Military Equipment (approximately 500 items),
  2. The Sfragistic Collection of Ancient Turkish Seals (46 items),
  3. The Collection of Uniforms (2 items),
  4. The Collection of Epigraphic Monuments and Tombstones (9 items),
  5. The Collection of Artifacts from Everyday Life (approximately 200 items).

The two-dimensional museum objects are divided into three collections:

  1. The Collection of Historical Documents (approximately 600 items),
  2. The Collection of Photographic Glass Plates (482 items),
  3. The Vexillological Collection of Historical Flags (3 items).
