This catalog presents the money of the states that historically ruled over the territory of present-day Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the currencies of states that circulated significantly in these areas. The author aims to engage an audience unfamiliar with numismatics and to provide basic information about the examples of money, i.e., coins, held in the Numismatic Collection of the Museum of the Republic of Srpska.
The collection was established shortly after the founding of the Museum of the Vrbas Banovina, as stated in the Museum’s 1931 Rules of Procedure. It is divided into four sections: ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary money. The catalog covers 230 of the total 2,735 monetary items in the Numismatic Collection.
In certain chapters, the author highlights the main characteristics of specific historical periods, while the catalog section is complemented by photographs of each selected item and includes two main chapters dedicated to coins and paper money. Although the selection does not intend to cover all types and denominations of currency - which would have been impossible over such a long period - the author uses examples from different historical periods to illustrate the dynamic monetary history of the territory of present-day Republic of Srpska.
